Business English (BEC)

The BEC Course (Business English Certificate) is designed to not only provide students with key skills to get good results in the BEC Test by Cambridge University but also give them the practical everyday skills they need to succeed in an English-speaking working environment and in international business.

1. Course Features

Competency-based – We focus on developing specific competencies in 4 key language skills – Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing – within the framework of the BEC Test.

Integrated – Grammar and Vocabulary are integrated into the learning of the 4 key language skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Current – Listening, reading, speaking and writing activities will be based on contemporary issues and current affairs taken from the media, the internet and our own texts.

Applicable – Vocabulary, skills and language structures learned can be used in life and business in international settings.

Practical – Students will practise key BEC skill-sets used in the BEC Test.

Peer-to-peer Learning – Discussions, pair work, role play and presentations enhance learning from each other.

Concentrated – Students are exposed to extended interaction with native speaker teachers in class and at English Corner. These teachers closely supervise students’ learning to help them use English correctly, especially with pronunciation.

Self-directed – Our special website eTeSL, UCSI’s web-based window to the world’s best English language learning and practice resources, is available to all UCSI students to use for further self-study.

2. At the end of this course, students will be able to

Be competent in the 4 key language skills – Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing within the framework of the BEC Test

Fully understand the BEC Test format

Fluently interact in spoken English on a wide range of contemporary topics

Competently produce a variety of writing for business purposes

Develop analytical skills to study and learn from case studies

Understand and apply practical tips to perform well in the BEC Test

Learn how to use English for life and work such as writing email, letters, reports and proposals, and conversing for social and business interactions, negotiating, handling interviews etc

4. Course Information

  • Schedule: Monday to Saturday
  • Entry Requirement: IELTS 5.0 or its equivalent
  • 3 modules** of 3 months each for a total of 9 months. The modules are:
    • Module 1 – Contact (36 hours/module)
    • Module 2 – Connect (36 hours/module)
    • Module 3 – Communicate (36 hours/module)

** A iCan Business English Certificate will be given at the end of each module.
